Reality Dreams is a daybook and a night-journey made by a poet who is there but not seen a ghost who haunts the Literary World.
Beginning with a summer in Provincetown, MA, the book circulates between a boyhood in Brooklyn and the Catskill Mountains; then Los Angeles, San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury District during the 1960s, Berkeley; and Bolinas CA of the early 1970s, when that small town was home to many well-known poets.
However, we are always returned to his daily life where this book was originally written, and where he was an adjunct art museum curator, and a Writer-in-Residence, at The University of New Mexico.
Inclusive are poems, an insightful philosophy, and dreams, along with extensive notes, bibliography, and a list of the notable persons who passed through his life.
Joel Weishaus has published over 50 reviews, essays and critiques of books and Visual Art. His Collected Poems, Feels Like Home Again, was published in 2014. You can access his Digital Archive at cddc.vt.edu/host/weishaus/index.htm

Reality Dreams Diary of a Poet as Ghost eBook Joel Weishaus

Joel Weishaus' Reality Dreams: Diary of a Poet Ghost is a haunting and timely portrayal of America's past. In reading Joel's evocative words I was called to leave my comfortable couch and enter his world. I was invited to surrender to the immediacy of a reality that seemed at once dreamed and lived. If I was going to read Reality Dreams, I must enter it as a ghost and haunt the pages along with Joel. Given where (and with whom) Joel has been, this is a undeniably fascinating "lived" experience.

Joel's shared reality reads like a generational tribute to an American past, a past that has been resurrected to overshadow us today. This is a recollection of shared moments and memories, phantom places and people that help us remember collectively who we are in relationship to ourselves, each other, and the world.

Joel digs deep in psychic soil to uncover hidden treasures, imagistic words that he strings together into artful jewelry from the underworld. Like a necklace that Kali might wear, this is a creation of dark beauty and an invitation to dance (sing, paint, write) with the dead. Given the current state of America, not to mention the world, I think this is a book whose kairos or opportune moment has come. It is both an important and entertaining work of art.

Reality Dreams Diary of a Poet as Ghost eBook Joel Weishaus Reviews

Reality Dreams by Joel Weishaus is a wonderful exploration of what it means to be a creative artist in a world that does not understand such a person nor such a way of life. In fact, the artist becomes a ghostly figure struggling to survive because of the tremendous dive of the creative imagination that WILL be expressed - whether or not the world pays attention. Weishaus is a formidable writer whose experimentation here with the autobiographical form gives a new dimension to so-called "life writing". He shows that true art may go unheard, but it shines though a life as a psychic force, even turning existence into a ghostly experience if that is what it takes. This book is a must for anyone trying to live the creative life; for anyone engaged in art and for all of us who care about the imagination. It explores the creative process in a way that offers stength and hope to artists. Like any such work, it expands what it means to be human.

Love it and not just because you mention my name.

Weishaus positions himself as a chronicler of his time. With unique prose, Weishaus breathes life into the ghosts of his past. Frequent references to his contemporaries Gary Snyner and Philip Whalen are fascinating to any fan of Post-Beat Northern California Zen(ish) poetry. There's a vivid blending of his exterior and interior worlds.
Truly reality as a dream. The author's reflections flow dream-like from one event into another. It's all connected. As a reader, I am drawn in and cannot stop reading or, rather, experiencing. The poetic language like a hypnotist takes you into another world that, at the same time, is never disconnected from ever-day realities.
