An epic novel stretching out from Samoa to Europe, America and New Zealand, from the turn of the nineteenth century, through the First World War, the Spanish Influenza Epidemic and beyond.Since the 1960s, Albert Wendt has created a profound and fabulous Pacific world that is uniquely his own. A fictional world focused on Samoa and New Zealand and reaching out to the centres of the world, a world inhabited by the richest menagerie of characters in Pacific fiction, characters whose lives and stories reflect our own complex depths. Sixteen years in the writing, The Mango's Kiss is a striking addition to that world.Pele's first moment of remembered consciousness is the morning kiss of the mango fruit on her cheek. That kiss brings with it the awareness of mortality, pleasure and pain. It is a gift from her father, Mautu Tuifolau, the local pastor, the man she adores. Love is never simple, though, and in this story of the struggles and passions of Pele and her family, it must adapt to the growing world that stretches out from village life in Samoa to the cities of Europe, America and New Zealand. It must accommodate the conflicts of a gifted family and the attraction of extraordinary outsiders, from a famous English writer to an American anthropologist, missionaries and the trader Barker, with his quest for gold and epic tales of an adventurous past. And it must encompass the family's links to the ancient gods of pre-missionary times and move through the turn of the nineteenth century, the First World War, the terrible Spanish Influenza Epidemic and beyond.

This other worldly book, brought me back to my stay in Samoa in 1957-1960 as a Mormon missionary. Those days aroused in me what lay in the Fa’aSamoa—the Samoan custom of oratory, proverbs, and the encroachment of the Europeans in those islands. I was aware of the titled (matai or chiefs ) and the untitled (tau’le’lea) and the language each of them spoke and the ultimate authority each carried. Wendt carries out the imagination to great lengths beyond what I would want to believe. As he says in this book “History is irony. I am more a pagan and you a Christian missionary.” “All things live in the Va/ which links them together/ in harmony and unity./ We must nurture relationships,/ the Va, for that’s what makes us/ who and what we are…”

This book is a rather sweeping look at Samoan families, customs, beliefs as contrasted with the European world of the 19th century, from pagan days to Christianity and the conflicts of everyday living in a Savai’i village an imaginary Satoa.
The book is full of Samoan words which causes me to think of the time I was speaking that language. It’s a highly imaginative journey into the past, and is layered with all kinds of meanings, imaginative and real. –Jim Stoker

The Mango Kiss edition by Albert Wendt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Unsure how to describe how and what I felt reading this amazing insight into my own heritage. I was literally one of the admiring children in the book hanging onto every word being wowed by the daring adventures. It really had me in the story. Entertaining how some of my life could have been if I had remained in Samoa. Reaffirming my own parents lives growing up and how things were. How so much has evolved over the years.

Even if you are not Samoan, the Professor easily draws you into this world which is rich in colour and steeped in history and mythology.

Definitely keeps you hungry to turn the pages with so many vivid characters to identify with and stir emotions. Life on an island is more than simply surviving the mundane. A self-less sharing of a community that works together to make it work for everyone.

I would recommend this book as to all Samoans who like me, are finding their Samoa within. (don't know if that makes sense). I am on a similar quest to the characters. We all are I suspect.

Thank you again Professor. Every book of yours I read, I am being transported both back in time and in the present. My heart longs to return home for good. )
